The beach had better be big enough for two Mitch Buchannons, as original TV star David Hasselhoff is set to join Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the “Baywatch” movie, it was announced Wednesday night.
Johnson posted a video to his Facebook in which he FaceTimes The Hoff, captioning the video, “I WAS BORN READY!” Pleasure to officially welcome the original #BAYWATCH gangsta himself David Hasselhoff to our movie! #BAYWATCH is the most successful TV show of all time and from the day we announced we were turning it into a movie, ‘The Hoff; has been our greatest supporter.”
Hasselhoff, who starred as the L.A. County Lifeguard in the series and also produced the show from the 1990s until 2001, will join the previously announced cast of Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra, Kelly Rohrbach and Hannibal Buress.
The story follows a veteran lifeguard (Johnson) who is forced to team up with a younger lifeguard (Efron) to save the beach from an environmental disaster.
Damian Shannon and Mark Swift wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, while Beau Flynn and Ivan Reitman are producing. Seth Gordon recently signed on to direct. Producers are targeting an early 2016 start.
The film will be a big-screen adaptation of the hit TV series of the same name, which ran from 1989 to 2001 starring Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson.
“Baywatch” is looking at a May 19, 2017 release date.
