Bindi Irwin was revealed to be the first celebrity contestant on season 21 of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” on Monday.
The daughter of late “Crocodile Hunter” star Steve Irwin, Bindi was just 8-years-old when her father died in a stingray attack off the coast of Australia. She currently lives with her mother, Teri, and younger brother, Robert, on the grounds of the Australia Zoo, which the family owns.
The announcement came during Monday’s “Good Morning America.”
“This is completely different than anything I’ve ever done in my life,” Bindi said on the morning program. “I’m used to wrangling crocodiles.”
Since her father’s death, Bindi has carried on his work in wildlife conservation, co-creating a book series, “Bindi Wildlife Adventures,” starring in two films and multiple TV shows focused on wildlife and conservation efforts. She also has her own dance troupe, “The Jungle Girls,” according to her bio on the Australia Zoo’s website.
The stars Bindi will compete against will be announced over the next two weeks. The full lineup of pro dancers includes past mirror ball champions Derek Hough, Mark Ballas and Karina Smirnoff.
“Dancing with the Stars” premieres on Sept. 14 at 8pm/7c on ABC.
