NFL quarterback Cam Newton’s recent sexist response to a female reporter finally has us talking about something other than the national anthem protests. Trevor Noah, for one, is grateful for that.
“It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes, like — it’s funny,” Newton had said when asked a question by Charlotte Observer beat writer Jourdan Rodrigue.
“You take a lot of pride in seeing your wide receivers play well. Devin Funchess has seemed to really embrace the physicality of his routes, and getting those extra yards,” the female reporter posed. “Does that give you a little bit of an enjoyment, to see him kind of truck-sticking people out there?”
That’s an astute question, Cam. Your answer was anything but.
Of the fallout that followed, which included yogurt company Dannon sacking Newton as its spokesperson, Noah joked: “At this point, with so many scandals, the NFL is probably like, ‘Can we get back to concussions?’”
“On the bright side, if this is the worst thing an NFL player did to a woman this week, then we’re making progress,” he concluded.
Amen to that, unfortunately. Watch the video above.
