“The Howard Stern Show” veteran Artie Lange, who recently appeared in an episode of HBO’s “Crashing” that dramatized his efforts to stay sober, was arrested for heroin and cocaine possession earlier this week, TMZ reports.
The comedian, who has spoken often about his struggles with drugs, was arrested in the parking garage of his Hoboken, New Jersey apartment complex.
TMZ reported that Lange had “several bags of drugs” in his possession. He was released after being booked on three charges, which the site did not identify. Hoboken police told TheWrap no one was available to discuss details of the arrest Friday night.
Lange acknowledged the arrest on Twitter Friday, tweeting, “Hey guys. I was arrested. I’m doing great. Physically too! I’m in St. Louis & will be on stage this weekend at The Funnybone! Love u all!.”
He added, “FYI The Hoboken Cops treated me so great. Great people. Professional. I thank them for that Now a lawyer tells me what to do!”
On HBO’s new comedy “Crashing,” Lange played a version of himself who hires Pete Holmes, also playing himself, to drive him to a standup gig in Buffalo, N.Y., and keep him from relapsing. Holmes manages to protect Artie from the temptation to get high with a devoted fan (Gina Gershon).
Lange was expected to be a recurring character on the show. The comedian referenced the series in his run of post-arrest tweets, writing, “To u worried fans pls know I love u. Also know I’ve never wanted to live more! If HBO has to let me go Its my bad! Judd, Pete & u. Thx!”
